Greetings from Ireland
Please excuse my german, I am using google translate
We have an MB Trac 800 (old type 1983) with gearbox problems, and we have decided to replace engine & gearbox with MAN 10.163. This tractor will be road tractor.
We are trying to find out differential ratio & hub reduction for MB800. the full axle is close to 14 : 1 . This is too slow.
we also have Unimog u406 with what we think are Differentail: 22/7
Hub reduction: 2.077
We are hoping to be able to interchange parts to make it work. does anyone know ratios of mb trac 800?

Hello nameless pal
the differential gear ratio normally is 24:7 (3,429) and the portal axle gear ratio is 45:11 (4,090), giving 14,025 in total
The 22:7 differential gear ratio was available as extra (SA T35918), and, depending on the age of the Unimog, could be transplanted from there, giving 12,857 in Total.
The portal axle gears will not fit, they are totally different, as they are adapted from the heavy Unimog series, and I'm not sure the Unimog gear wheels fit in the MB-Trac portal gear housing.
You could perhaps try to get the faster special differential gears (23:9) from the Unimog to get more speed?
And how do you plan to implant the MAN gearbox? The front axle is connectet to the trac's gearbox...

Thank you. The Unimog 406 we have was one of the first with the OM352 engine, so perhaps the differential will fit..
what unimog had the differential gears 23:9
that ratio would work well, 1500rpm engine speed would translate to 45km/h
thanks
Kevin

Hello Kevin,
you don't really want to kill an almost 50 year old Unimog for some f***ing differential gears?
The faster gear ratio was available for almost any Unimog, depending on what the customer needed or wanted.
And how do you want to solve the problem with the front axle? Or will you build a 4x2 MB-Trac with custom front axle?

giving it a new lease of life with more power and faster
we want it to look like MB Trac but just quicker and more power.
we have other tractors to bring around and they are quite slow on the road. we have Schluter Super 1500TVL, & 650 TVL and a Hanomag r40, also 4 Deutz 8005 and others.
yes it will be 4x2 and we are thinking of putting the front axle further forward to give longer wheel base, less bounce & more stability at speed. we may be putting in steering box from truck also. we may fit anti roll bars & air suspension in rear. also the front axle is connected to gearbox now, we will make new hinge mounts onto chassis

Hello Kevin,
You
have to post some pictures of this modified MBtrac.

I will post pictures no problem when we get started. Should be soon, unimog 406 bits to sell first
does anyone know where we can get 23:9 crownwheel & pinnion set that will fit into an mb 800 differential housing, either a rebuild kit or second hand spare parts?

Hello Kevin,
that will not be an easy search, because most Unimoggers also want these diffs.
Bit if you plan a total conversion, you could perhaps look out for a U1600 rear axle. The U1600 also has the bigger portal gears, like the MB-Trac 800, but with a better gear ratio.
I don't know if the gears will fit into the Trac housing, but you could perhaps implant the whole axle (it is only a few mm wider than the trac axle). Especially if you plan to implant air suspension you will need to modify the axle mounting anyway.
